Until I saw a preview of this comic in Wizard Magazine
a couple of months ago I had written this new series off as something
which would have little appeal to me. With two huge characters like
these I just felt it would be impossible to pull this off without
it being campy and very shallow, boy was I wrong.
Superman and Batman come from
two entirely different ends of the spectrum, but when trouble looms
they’ll be there to lend a helping hand no matter what. Metallo
is on the rampage as he tries to track down his former body, Superman
follows him to Gotham and there he and Batman confront
the man of metal with disastrous results.
This far surpasses Loeb’s current writing
in the Batman comics and is a refreshingly fun and interesting look
at the primary differences between the two lead characters. Loeb
[Batman] manages to wangle in some terrific ideas
which keep his angle on this duo both fresh and surprisingly realistic,
considering how ‘over the top’ this comic could have
been. I’m not one to give away any spoilers but trust me,
if you have any interest in these core DC characters there are some
great moments in this first issue that fan boy’s will love
and the hook at the end is dynamite and will have you salivating
for more!
Ed McGuinness [Superman] has truly
stepped up his game for this and with the aid of Dave Stewart
on colours he has managed to grab the bright and fresh
feel of Superman and Metropolis and at the same time the dark and
grim feel of Batman and Gotham. This visual contrast helps to aid
the narrative contrast which permeates the entire story and it’s
vital that this comic has an artist like McGuinness who
can draw as good a Batman as he can Superman.
A rocking good start to a series that looks full
of surprises, fun and adventure, be sure not to miss it.
Score 9/10
