Spleenland Productions start off with this volume which contains four tales showcasing the art and writing talents of four close friends.

The main story is written and drawn by Geoff Hawley and is entitled ‘The Labyrinth’. It is a somewhat bleak tale that focuses on one individual, Jorge Luis Borges, meeting different versions of himself from his past and future.

The story didn’t grab me but the art was nicely done. Geoff manages to draw his featureless characters with great skill, they emote second to none and the use of hands and body position is very well done.

The other half of this compendium is called ‘Nepotism’ and is split into three short stories. Each one has its own art approach from children’s book style artwork through to science/biology textbook drawings. All three stories are done well enough, but again the storytelling seemed negative and bland if not downright confusing at times.

As a closing point I must mention that it was a good laugh to see some references to Africa in the one story and some archaeological reference as well. It took me back to my days of studying, yep I’ve actually got a degree in Archaeology, sad as that may seem…

A good start for this small press group of creators. A bit too ‘arty’ for my liking, I didn’t always enjoy the forced ‘deep’ storytelling. The artwork was great though and a nice showcase of various talented individuals.
