There are not many publishers that can lay claim to conquering new
and exciting genres in comics these days. Crossgen has always been
on the edge of science fiction and fantasy comics over
the past four years and now they turn back time and start a new
adventure that looks back into the history books with the pirates
of El Cazador.
A Spanish merchant ship is boarded and plundered by a group of pirates.
But when a young woman survivor kills the pirate leader
and takes over the ship, things get interesting.
Chuck Dixon [Way of the Rat,Sigil]
delights us with some stunning old English and Spanish dialogue
along with some classic olden day narrative storytelling. This jump
into the past is made to feel just like the real thing and Dixon
seems to be trying his best to keep it authentic and as historically
accurate as possible.
The story has a few twists, even within the first few pages, and
promises to be something different and interesting
for readers to get into. The fact that the lead character is played
by a woman is non conformist and already leads to some great scenes
in this issue. Just seeing the look on the pirate’s faces
as a prissy young woman ruthlessly guns down one of their own is
already worth the price of admission.
Crossgen’s known for their high quality of art and they’ve
done it once again with this release. Steve Epting
and Frank D’armata combine to create some
stunningly detailed and realistic artwork. The details and effort
put into each panel is astonishing and each ship, outfit and environment
rings true of the period in question.
This is a solid start to what looks like a fun series. The art alone
will keep me interested for a long time but it’s nice to see
the story is on par and somewhat original with a good twist at the
same time. Score 9/10
