If you’re a fan of fantasy adventure comics along the lines of Joe Madureira’s Battle Chasers then you’re sure to enjoy Ale Garza’s Ninja Boy.

The last in the line of the Mugen Ninja, Nakio must avenge the deaths of his brothers and kill their slayer, the evil Mikaboshi. But with evil assassins following his every step this will prove to be no easy task.

This collection turned out to be a lot more fun than I ever expected. It’s a strange mix of extreme violence and comedic adventure that gels together to form a fast-paced action escapade placed in an Eastern/Japanese fantasy setting.

Allen Warner injects a great deal of comedy into the script via such characters as Sake, a hamster like rodent who talks and is a raging alcoholic. As strange as this may seem he is one of the most likeable characters in the series and a classic partner for the somewhat sombre and introverted presence that Nakio brings to the story.

Ale Garza [E.V.E ProtoMecha, Gen 13] has established a beautiful fantasy setting based on feudal Japan in which the story takes place. Evergreen forests, towering mountains and raging rivers make for a stunning natural background for the characters to explore and interact with.

Garza excels in his character design in this book and it looks like he really enjoyed being able to explore some ancient and varied cultures when coming up with costume ideas for his characters. Mikaboshi’s assassins led by Zensho are especially well designed with Zensho himself sporting a look based along African Tribal lines. It’s these diverse and varied traditionally based outfits and costumes along with the fantastical settings and way-out characters that make Ninja Boy a joy to look at.

A fun action-adventure with a strange mix of violence and comedy that’ll have you laughing out loud and eagerly reading on until the final page.
