Brian Bendis [Ultimate Spider-Man,
Powers] continues to take Daredevil on to new things
arc after arc and this, the latest collection of the wildly popular
series, is a pure joy to read.
After being attacked by his underlings the Kingpin
has left US shores in a coma and his wife has sold his ganglands
off to local hoodlums. A second rate super-villain, the
Owl, has decided to score off the locals and take over
the Kingpin’s turf. With Matt Murdock pinned in by the press
and an impending multi-million dollar lawsuit about his secret identity,
who will stop the Owl?
Bendis has done it again, he’s managed to pen another gripping
chapter of ‘The Man Without Fear’,
filled with thought provoking dialogue, underground intrigue and
just enough action to keep you turning the page. Bendis even manages
to drop in some props to the old ‘Gangs of New York’
in one dialogue during this story. It’s this attention to
detail and thoughtful dialogue that makes this collection worth
the read. Bendis is known for his ‘talking heads’
style of comics and that is definitely true of this story so be
prepared.
One great piece of characterization is done by Bendis with the Owl.
He manages to make him into a psychotic, menacing and scary villain,
which is no easy feat with such a campy third-rate character. Credit
must be given to Alex Maleev who does a great job
enforcing the characters frightening presence through his visuals.
Maleev continues to impress with his gritty, heavily
textured art, which brings seriousness to the world of
Daredevil and makes Bendis’ storytelling easier to fall into.
It’s a highly effective partnership for the two creator’s
as the result is a truly original feeling super-hero comic.
A perfect addition to your Daredevil collection and a classic story
in itself. Some nice guest appearances by Jessica Jones
[Alias] and Luke Cage [Cage,
Daredevil] add nicely to a well rounded page turner
of a story. A highly enjoyable read.
Score 9/10
