In modern day comics it’s all too familiar for an ongoing
series to be re-issued with a new # 1 in order to promote sales.
In a move that shows the history and reverence to a classic we come
to an unrivalled issue # 800, join me for a look
as a group of talented creators pay homage to the Man of Steel.
Superman, the Man of Steel, American hero and all round classic
superhero. The story shows all the facets of the hero we have come
to love over the years. Starting out in Smallville, moving to Metropolis
and throughout the world, this is as much a history lesson on Supes
as it is a coming of age story.
In between ‘chapters’ of the story there are ‘pieces’
or ‘reflections’ on how Superman has affected society
over the years. Each one of these ‘reflections’ showcases
the work of a different high-profile artist and trust me when I
say high-profile. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the guys
on the list:
Alex Ross
Ed McGuiness
Jim Lee
Tim Sale
The short-list above is but to name a few, a total of 14
pencillers, 4 inkers and 3 colourists appears in this anniversary
special which makes this a must have for any comic enthusiast.
Pure value for money and a true Superman classic, it’s hard
not to recommend this issue. Double-sized and packed
with history/origin based story-telling which will appeal to anyone
and filled to the brim with earth-shattering artwork. Don’t
miss this classic Superman tale, its issue # 800 people! , they
don’t come round that often, so just pick it up.
Score 8/10
