I picked this book up due to the huge potential of the writing talent
on board. I was not disappointed in the least, this is a great police-drama
which had me itching to read more.
Ed Brubaker has recently revolutionised Catwoman
and Greg Rucka is on the top of his game having just finished penning
the Ultimate Daredevil & Elektra mini-series.
This duo of mind boggling writing ability have proven themselves
once again by creating a side of Gotham we have never truly seen
before. They take us streetside, into the gritty real-life drama
of what it is to be a cop in the city of shadows. How do the cops
handle super-villains? How do they cope with handing over their
biggest cases to heroes such as Batman? All of these questions and
many more help to drive a police drama second to none.
The artwork is probably not going to impress many people who are
into today’s comic fads, no manga-styled characters and garishly
bright colouring at play here, just gritty but solid renderings
of Gotham’s finest at work.
Noelle Giddings uses a lot of browns and greys and a nice amount
of blue-tones to promote the reality based edge that this comic
is aiming for. The artwork and story-focus remind me more of a Vertigo
project than a DC mainstream title. Mixing this reality based storytelling
along with the super-heroes of DC’s universe leaves some great
avenues for this series to really take off and be something quite
brilliant.
This book is refreshing in its realism based flavour. Great parts
in this first issue leave me looking forward to more. If you like
your cop dramas and reality based super-hero comics then this is
the perfect series for you. I highly recommend this title.
Score 9/10
