Free Comic Book Day [FCBD] was upon us in all it’s
glory in May and local South African creators jumped
on board and delivered an eclectic mixed bag of a comic book for
all of us to enjoy for free!
The promise of this comic was that there would be no script and
that one creator starts and the next one takes over and so on. The
result is definitely imaginative and has its highlights but overall
the effect might have been more negative than positive for such
an event as FCBD.
Let me discuss the highlights first. This comic is an excellent
showcase of the wealth of talent available in South Africa.
I can only imagine that the artists had tight deadlines for this
project, due to its nature, and that a single page storyline per
creator is a tough one to pull off as a whole. Certain artists stand
out above others but the book is still enjoyable and highly
creative even though it has a mix of both weak and strong
pages throughout.
My major problem with this title is the content. With swearing,
blasphemy and sexual content one wonders why this would be a showcase
piece for an event like FCBD. Surely new readers
of the younger generation wouldn’t enjoy such content as we
see in this book, such as the scene with the pregnant woman and
the demons??!!?? Even though some kids may enjoy the more twisted
scenes I’m sure a lot of parents would have freaked if happening
to look through little Johnny’s comics one day. The comic
industry is already under attack by censorship committees so why
help them? We have so much to offer why not chill on the freaky
stuff for a week and bring out something more readable for the general
public for an event like FCBD? I truly feel that a book like this
could do more damage than good to local comics in the context that
it was delivered.
All the bitching aside this was a great idea for a project and it
was pulled off nicely. If it had just been showcased differently
and not given away on FCBD then I’m sure it would have done
a whole lot better.
Score 5/10
