Aaaah the quintessential comic for all new readers to pick up on Free Comic Book Day [FCBD], that of course would be titled, ‘ Christa Shermot’s 100% Guaranteed How-To Manual for getting anyone to read comic books’. Let’s see if the titles promise is true or not.

Story wise this comic is different to anything you’ve probably seen before. The writer focuses on four different reader profiles, the young guy, teenage girl, the older guy and the older woman. This book/manual jumps from story sample to story sample showing each prospective reader what comics have that will interest them specifically.

Because of the constant jumping around it’s hard to judge the overall story as it is not singular in nature. The overall feel is great though and the comic is filled with great ideas and execution, character and a good dose of humour. The main ‘storyline’ is told via narration by two leading characters from ‘Fade to Blue’ also published by 2nd To Some Studios.

The narration and the comic in general is very wordy and it can get overwhelming and make you feel bogged down at times. However this is also what makes the book work so well, they get a lot of great points across in a short amount of space and time.

The art is great throughout and easy enough to follow for new readers. A bunch of samples from ‘Fade to Blue’ have been used as examples to potential readers. Unfortunately for fans of the series it’s probably all been seen before.

A great project, well executed and originally thought out. If only more books like this could get out to the mainstream reader we might just see more converts. A joy to read, whether you love comics or not.

Score 9/10
