The second issue in this new Tsunami title looks set to light up
the shelves as the story takes a new twist. Normally a book doesn’t
warrant a review with every single issue that comes out, but if
something important changes and takes the book in an interesting
new direction, then it’s time to grant it some well
earned exposure.
Johhny Stom [aka:The Human Torch] attempts to break
the land speed record in yet another publicity driven event used
to fuel his ego. Storm also runs into his old arch-nemesis Mike
Snow whom he hasn’t seen since high school. But it’s
no juvenile matter that Snow has come to speak to Johnny about…
With this comic looking like it was going to be another teen focused
high school gimmick, I had mostly written it off. This issue turned
that all around and really caught me off guard. With a delightful
plot twist and via clever usage of the first issues set up story
the Human Torch looks like an entirely different comic. The story
now has a focal point and has turned almost fully circle into a
narrative with consequence and some nice touches
of reality.
The first half of this chapter’s story is not very awe-inspiring
in itself, but it does however aid tremendously in thickening out
the character of Johnny Storm. It’s the second half that really
impressed and surprised me. I won’t spoil any of the story
here, but the comic really gets going in this second half and it
ends with a really great hook. For those of you who are sitting
on the fence about this series it looks like it’s about to
take off so grab issue two right now to be kept in the loop.
With my love of graffiti and Amerimanga stylised art it’s
no doubt that I still find Skottie Young’s
[Spider-Clan,Iceman:Icons] pencils
a major draw card for this series. Young manages to render some
great scenes, and along with some breath-taking lighting effects
by the Studio F crew, this issue is a joy to look at.
Issue number two stands out as the best so far in the very short
history of this title. As the ‘Burn’
story arc progresses it looks like it’s going to turn out
to be better than first expected.
Score 8/10
