Damon Hurd and Pedro Camello, the stellar team behind the amazingly
successful independent release My Uncle Jeff, return
with another graphic novella in this the first of three books in
their new series entitled ‘A Sort of Homecoming’.
Owen Reilly returns to his flat after shopping to answer a phone
call that will change his life. His best friend David has died.
Owen must come to grips with David’s passing as he begins
his journey back to New York in order to attend his funeral.
Hurd has once again managed to hit one out of the ballpark.
His ability to capture real life in the form of a comic is second
to none. The dialogue comes across in a stunning fashion and it’s
hard not to become instantly attached to the characters and fully
absorbed in the story due to Hurd’s amazing ability
with written speech patterns. The phone conversations in
the book stand out as especially realistic, with pauses and shifts
in emotion it’s as close to genuine dialogue as it gets.
Pedro Camello lends his ability with pencils and brush once again
to illustrate Hurd’s words. Much of the story is told via
the artwork in this issue and there are sometimes entire pages that
are void of any words. Camello excels in these moments and
is a master at displaying emotion through facial expression and
body language. On other pages the opposite might happen
and the words will drown out the imagery, but in both cases Camello
maintains a steady artistic flow and tells a great story via the
art.
The ball is rolling in what is sure to be another hit for this dynamic
duo. If reality and emotion are you big thing then
be sure you don’t miss out on this book.
Score 9/10
