Marc Silvestri pencils Grant Morrison’s final arc as the New X-men scribe. Will Morrison’s last story round off his already triumphant run on Marvel’s premier mutant team with a bang?

150 years in the future a human and his Sentinel partner carry the ‘Phoenix Egg’ across the wastelands of Megamerica hunting for the last remnants of Xavier’s Institute. Unbeknownst to them a ‘Crawler’ has hitched a ride only to reveal itself deep inside The Institutes base. In an all out battle for the ‘Egg’ will ‘The Beast’s’ Crawlers win?

Grant Morrison [Animal Man, The Invisibles] has come full circle in his run on the New X-men and has decided to finish of with a futuristic ‘Magnum Opus’ about the X-Men and the future world they might find themselves in. This issue has a few confusing and intermingled storylines which is standard for a set-up issue like this one set in the ‘unknown’ future. Nevertheless this is an enticingly great read. For science fiction fans of such franchises as The Matrix this is the X-Men comic book you’ve been waiting for.

With just the right mix of X-Men, Biblical and post-apocalyptic references this seems to be a storyline which could turn into an instant classic. It’s good fun catching all the references Morrison uses in this ‘Future’ world to the X-Men of our time. Many staples have changed, the Beast is evil, you’ll find yourself falling in love with a Sentinel and you’ll understand just how powerful Night Crawler’s abilities truly could be…

To top it all off this arc is a true visual celebration as Marc Silvestri [Uncanny X-Men, The Darkness, Witchblade] returns to the X-Men with some of his best work in years. Morrison and Silvestri seem like the perfect match as Silvestri’s images bring to life the cybernetic, apocalyptic future that Morrison writes so well.

Silvestri even manages to make the age-old frumpy Sentinel design look sleek and awe-inspiring at the same time. His environments are very solid and the endless metallic tendrils loop holing through ‘The Manhattan Crater’ bring to mind many a Matrix reference. Silvestri’s main draw card is his brilliant character illustration as he brings to life old favourites like Emma Frost, Wolverine and Cyclops as well as new heroes like E.V.A and Beak in a dynamic new format.

This is only the beginning to what could be a classic ‘Days of Future Past’ style story. With the awesome talent on this arc you’d be a fool not to take a look at this. The all-star team up of writer Grant Morrison and artist Marc Silvestri will leave you drooling for more.
