Legendary fairy tale characters come to life – except it has
that classic Vertigo twist. Snow White, Rose Red, Big Bad Wolf,
Prince Charming and a host of others all inhabit the secret community
of Fabletown, right in the middle of New York. Banished from their
original homes by a mysterious enemy (whose ID is not revealed ),
they all live in exile, their identities are kept secret from the
‘mundanes’ i.e. the term used for normal human beings.
The first story arc is a murder mystery: Rose Red’s bloodied
apartment is discovered and with her missing, a murder is strongly
suspected. Bigby Wolf is the chief investigator & along with
Snow White, who is the de facto head of the Fabletown community
(and also the sister of Rose Red), they attempt to solve the case.
The pace picks up as the story unfolds & it’s a classic
whodunit, with its resolution and explanations made at a public
function, all the characters present and Bigby Wolf as master
of ceremonies.
The story is not text-heavy, and we learn much about the personalities
involved through clever and realistic dialogue. As such, this
story arc contains all the best elements which we’ve come
to expect from Vertigo. Bill Willingham has created an original
urban fantasy, and infused these well-known characters from literature
with witty and amusing dialogue. One is led to believe that had
these characters really lived and breathed in modern society,
this is one way that they could have talked and acted –
often with surprising results. Its fun spotting a much-loved fairy
tale character in the background as you go along or racking your
memory trying to identify one!
The trade also contains a text and illustrated story which did
not appear in the original comics. It reveals interesting background
information but is not essential to the story. I found little
to criticize in this first story arc; even the art is fine and
uncluttered. Highly recommended – this one will leave you
salivating for more!
