The pencilling debut of Josh Blaylock, the writer
behind such titles as Image/Devil’s Due Kore,
is finding its own little spot in my comics box. Take a look at
an independent style comic with a twist.
Allysa lives in a futuristic realm where life is almost
perfect. Everyone is the same and does the same things
day in and day out. She has dreams and longs for realities which
break the ‘perfectionist’ norm. She
speaks when she shouldn’t and does things she aught not to.
The powers that be can’t afford to have her messing up their
perfect existence, she will have to be exterminated.
Blaylock does a good job on this title as he not only pencils but
also writes the story. He manages to keep it original and interesting
via his well written script and some nice ideas. The perfect world
that Allysa lives in and her rebelling against it is a reflection
of real life in the writer’s rebellion against corporate
America. Although this is plain to see and is somewhat
forced at moments, it is also what makes this comic an enjoyable
read. If you have ever felt out from the norm or misunderstood,
as we all have at some time or another, then this is definitely
a book for you.
The artwork is nothing fancy but is does the job
and there are some solid scenes in this first issue. Character design
is rather basic and follows the futuristic, clean sci-fi feel that
matches the advanced society in question. Little titbits like jetpacks
that transform into robots are great and very well written into
the story.
It’s the little things that grab me in this
story and the reality that it is set up against. I enjoyed it as
a commentary on modern society and the rebellion against
the rat race. The last few pages are filled with comments
and fan art which fill the reader in with more info about the series.
The card stock cover is great and the production values by Image
on this title are really slick. I’m looking forward to seeing
Allysa coming to earth, working at a comic store and going
Punk in upcoming issues.
Score 7/10
