I never intended to follow this series when it was originally solicited as it looked like a comeback of an old and essentially dull series. After all this is the beginning of volume six for the Inhumans title and anything cancelled or tried five times without any major success to date probably won’t last very long in today’s comics market.

The Inhumans live as a society apart, far from earth on the moon. As a young man San reaches the age of change where all Inhumans go through a process called Terrigenesis and are transformed into their true forms. San expects to turn into a mighty warrior like his father, but alas he must now face life as a lowly artist.

The first thing that struck me after finishing this issue was how gripping the story was. I have never read any of the previous incantations of the Inhumans, bar a few appearances in a Fantastic Four comic or two, and so the concept and story really had me engrossed. This is a refreshing and original look at ‘Superheroes’ and a nugget of gold amongst the endless tide of rubbish coming to us via the Tsunami line of comics. The narrative is thoroughly enjoyable as a coming of age story and an explanation of how the Inhuman society is structured. It ends with a great hook and I’m definitely in for issue number two.

The art by Mathew Clark is very solid and it has a huge amount of imagination in the area of character design. The city on the moon, Attilan, is well designed and the mixture of technology and classical sci-fi architecture is nicely done. The thing that stands out in the art is most definitely the character and costume design, they are both weird and wonderful and portray the assorted mix of race and caste that permeates through the Inhuman culture.

A thoroughly enjoyable read which promises to be a great title for Tsunami. Hopefully the book will stay this good, but for now enjoy the original art and story that is the Inhumans.
