The last issue of HERO that I reviewed was number two a few months
back but after hearing even more good things about this title I
felt it was time to return and see whose life has been turned upside
down be the ‘H-Dial’ device this time.
Meet Matt Allen a young businessman on the go.
Bored with his life as an office goer, Matt takes to the skies as
a super hero thanks to the ‘H-Dial’
device that grants him super powers. Unfortunately
the device also has the ability to steal from Matt’s life…
This story focuses on the cycle of addiction that
Matt finds himself in once he starts using the ‘H-Dial’
device. His corporate world seems so boring and slowly he starts
to long for his all to short time as an after-hours super hero.
His degradation is shown cleverly as he starts to spend less time
at his real job and at his home and more time as a caped crusader,
until climatically his wife and daughter walk out on him.
This is a diverse mix of brutal reality with a
touch of super hero fantasy mixed in. Mostly though it is the story
of a businessman’s affair with his longing for more power
even though he already has it all, a beautiful wife, daughter, car
and a great job. A clever twist on the mundane lives that so many
of us lead that it’s easy to place oneself in the protagonists
role and understand the emotions of his character as he tries to
escape his life through his super-heroics. The ability of the writing
to reflect reality and by using situations that the reader can place
themselves in has really been the benchmark of this series so far
and it continues in this issue.
The artwork by Kano does a nice job of showing
the conflict of the corporate environment versus the super hero
lifestyle. The bright costume design versus the boring business
suit is a great example of the visual reference which he uses to
add depth to the story.
A really good addition to the HERO comics, this
series is something most readers should have no problem relating
to. It’s still the number one series when it comes to mixing
real life scenarios with super-heroics and it looks like it’ll
continue to do so under this talented creative team.
Score 8/10
