Iain: Give us a brief rundown of what you do?

Jake: I am an art director at ReelFX Creative studios. Which means I do lots of drawing, conceptualizing, and animating.

Iain: Can you describe a typical workday for you?

Jake: I usually like to start off the day with a warm up sketch. Then I’ll check in with the Creative Director to see what’s on my plate for the day or the coming week. Then I draw and collaborate, maybe have a couple meetings. And call it a day.

Iain: How and when did you start seriously drawing?

Jake: Hmmmm, tough question…I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. I guess somewhere along the way I started taking it more seriously than before. It was a gradual thing.

Iain: What tools do you use to draw your work?

Jake: A regular blue pencil to rough it in, then I’ll either tighten it up with a mech pencil or go straight into inking depending on how tight the blue sketch is already. The blue pencil doesn’t show up when I scan the inks in. So, it’s really handy to use it.

Iain: Do you enjoy colouring your work as much as you do drawing it?

Jake: I do.

Iain: You have a really nice anime/american hybrid style to some of you more recent stuff, what are your biggest influences?

Jake: That Korean guy who was doing the Magna Carta stuff really impressed me, and I’ve been trying to learn from him. There was also a guy that worked in the Korean branch at Phantagram Entertainment when I was there who was a big influence. His name’s Jungsic Park and I haven’t seen his stuff anywhere but at work, it’s a shame he doesn’t have a website or something.

Iain: What stuff are you currently working on?

Jake: The G.I.Joe SpyTroops movie for Habro.

Iain: What's been your favourite project to date?

Jake: I really, really enjoyed working on a little Missile Mouse ashcan I did last year.

Iain: What would be your dream project?

Jake: Doing another Missile Mouse book, and having all day to work on it.

Iain: How long have you been drawing comic related artwork?

Jake: Not too long, a couple years.

Iain: Are you keen to work exclusively in the comics world or just keep doing conceptual stuff?

Jake: I’d like to do both.

Iain: Ok, name me 5 things you love about being an illustrator?

Jake: I think the main reason is just creating stuff. Taking a chunk of graphite or some pixels and turning them into something really cool.

Iain: So, if you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Jake: A space explorer.

Iain: Are you collecting any comics these days?

Jake: Yeah, been getting some older Mignola stuff off of eBay. If there’s something cool on the shelf I’ll pick it up.

Iain: You've done a few Batgirl projects in the past, would you be keen to work more in the superhero line of things? if so which books would you like to work on?

Jake: I’m not too into superheroes right now. If I were to do a superhero thing I’d like to do something totally different, like that spore story Michel Gagne did a little while ago with Batman.

Iain: Your favourite comic character is?

Jake: Hellboy.

Iain: Thanks so much Jake, all the best in the future.

Jake: Thank you, too.
